Welcome to the first edition of our new newsletter. We plan to publish this on a regular basis, beginning quarterly, to report on our recent events and let you know what's coming soon.
If you have questions about the Council or it's programs, call or email us and we will do our best to answer them in a following issue.
We hope you find the newsletter interesting and useful. Let us know what you would like to see added to the newsletter - or any other suggestions for improving it.
As you may know Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council became an all-volunteer organization at the end of last year. This has been quite a challenge, but I’m pleased to report that we have made considerable progress.
Checks for all the grants from the state of New Jersey have been distributed to the supported 18 arts organizations and 6 history organizations for 2017 (a total of $63,900 for Sussex County). We are already working on the grants for 2018.
We have had a successful first quarter for our art gallery on Spring Street in Newton. We ran an “Artists’ Choice" members' exhibit, our "Xpose" juried photography show, and the County’s Youth Art and Teen Art events. The Skylands Juried Exhibition attracted strong support and included many high-quality works. We have planned a strong program for the rest of the year and we are optimistic about our future.
Presenting these programs is a lot of work for our volunteers. If you have a little time, and are willing to help, please let us know. We are always looking for more members of the team.

VISIT OUR NEW WEBSITE
We have recently introduced our new website designed to improve the services we can provide for all members. This is still a work in progress but some important improvements are already implemented.
The changes include:
A new, more flexible technology so we can present up to date information more easily
An improved process for signing up new members and for easy renewal of memberships
As we go forward we want to develop the web site with the content that you want to see. Email us your suggestions and we'll do our best to include them in future updates. (email@example.com).
A SPECIAL EXHIBITION
We have enjoyed a special exhibit (closed April 26) showing the work of well-known Byram artist David Rush. There were over 30 works on display and some of them new. This has been a great show and we are grateful to David for sharing his work with us.
IN THE GALLERY NOW
The exhibit currently in the Spring Street gallery is our annual flagship exhibition. Skylands Juried Art Exhibition will remain on display until June 10. If you have not yet seen it - it is worth a visit.
A large gathering of artists and friends attended the opening champagne reception on Saturday, May 6. Twelve cash awards, with a total value of $2,700 were presented to winning artists.
A critique of the exhibited art was held on Saturday May 20. Mary Birmingham, the judge of the show, discussed her approach to selecting entries and awards, and provided advice for artists preparing their works for entering juried exhibitions. She also responded to requests from individual artists to comment on their work.

We are a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization with a mission to foster and promote the artistic and cultural vitality of Sussex County. At our art gallery at 133 Spring Street in Newton we present exhibitions for our members. We also have two juried exhibits each year, a special senior citizen exhibit and special exhibits for young artists. We are the designated organization distributing grant funds provided by the State of New Jersey to art and history groups throughout Sussex County. We also arrange art displays in county businesses and public spaces.
With an all-volunteer staff, the Council is currently run by the Governance Committee of the Board of Trustees. We always welcome new help. If you can spare a little time, any help is appreciated in our support for the arts and heritage in Sussex County. We are particularly looking for light office skills such as answering the phone and computer skills including Word, Excel and Publisher. Call 973-383-0027 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information, or to join the team.
