New Jersey: Our Rich History
Exhibition on view: October 17 – November 21
New Jersey boasts a rich and diverse history, from its early inhabitants, the indigenous Lenni Lenape, to the later Dutch and English settlers. Thanks to groundbreaking inventions and an abundance of natural resources like iron ore and fertile farmland, our state has made significant contributions to the nation. New Jersey also played a pivotal role during the Revolutionary War, with historic sites found across the state.
We can claim the first planned industrial city, Paterson, with its factories and silk mills powered by the Great Falls. An early example of innovative waterway engineering is found with the Morris Canal. The Jersey Shore was the first oceanfront resort to gain international fame, and during the Victorian era, Ocean Grove, Atlantic City, and Cape May were the epitome of coastal elegance.
These are just a few of New Jersey’s many highlights. We encourage you to explore our historic sites and museums to discover more about our state’s remarkable past and find inspiration for this exhibition celebrating New Jersey History.
