    Sumi-e Bamboo Painting Class

Date: Friday, July 11 from 4-6 PM

    What is SUMI-E?

SUMI-E is the Japanese word for Blank Ink Painting, East Asian painting and writing developed together in ancient China using the same materials – brush and ink on paper. Emphasis is placed on the beauty of each stroke of the brush, striving to “capture the essence or spirit of the subject” in a painting. The paper used can vary greatly in price, medium, and construction. However, the most common for class room use is an absorbing rice paper.

Sumi-e Ink paintings are usually done based on memory and not from direct subject matter. Nature is studied and then the artist creates his feeling from it, creating the “chi” of the forms.

In this beginner class, you will explore different brush strokes to create your own bamboo sumi ink painting! Do not wear clothes you do not want ink on. Even with precautions, such as aprons, ink does not come out of clothes. Please dress accordingly.

Please register in advance to guarantee your spot as spaces are limited. Go to our Workshops and Classes page to register for the class or call us at 973-383-0027.

Man-Made and Natural Architecture On View

This exhibition invited artists to explore the tension, harmony, and parallels between the constructed and the organic. From towering skyscrapers and sprawling cityscapes to the intricate architecture of bird nests, flowing rivers, and rugged mountains—this theme celebrates structure in all its forms.

Artists were encouraged to interpret the theme in any way, welcoming both abstract and representational approaches, as well as all styles and mediums. Whether through literal depictions or conceptual explorations, this show seeks to showcase the diverse ways structure influences our environments, imaginations, and sense of place.
